Four years ago, Courtney Urbat walked into Charter for a job interview—and somehow ended up sticking around for Thanksgiving lunch.
“I interviewed the day of Charter’s Thanksgiving celebration and was invited to stay for it afterwards,” Courtney said. “It was very funny to me, since I was essentially just a random person crashing this potluck. But it was great to see how everyone was so nice and friendly before I even started.”
Courtney originally heard about the opportunity through her friend (and Charter employee) Taylor Binkley, whom she has known since high school. Taylor explained what Charter did and mentioned an opening in accounts payable. Courtney thought it sounded like a good fit for where she was in life, so she decided to give it a shot.
It was more than a good fit; Courtney joined Charter’s team as an Accounts Payable Specialist and will celebrate four years with the company in November.
More Than Just Accounts Payable
Today, Courtney describes herself as an Accounts Payable Specialist and a bit of a “catch-all.”
That’s because her responsibilities have grown beyond invoices. She helps with fleet tracking and rentals, reconciles accounts, manages Taylor’s finishing reports, and organizes the many events Charter participates in. She also enjoys being someone people can turn to when they need an extra hand.
A Place Where Work Can Still Be Fun
Courtney admits that she was a little nervous about starting at Charter, but she quickly learned what people meant when they described the company as one big family.
“People genuinely care about their coworkers and have real friendships with each other outside of the office,” she said. “I think that’s so special, since we spend most of our time with one another.”
Sometimes that means getting work done together. Other times, it means catching up with coworkers once work is finished. And on rare occasions, it requires spending part of an afternoon on the hunt for a mysteriously loud cricket.
Courtney remembers sitting in JC’s office when they heard a cricket chirping. After the sound disappeared and then returned later, they started to suspect someone was playing a prank. They were right: Taylor had hidden a cricket noisemaker in the office. Case closed.
“That juxtaposition between going back and forth between getting the work I needed done that day and looking for that darn noisemaker really encompasses working at Charter,” Courtney said.
Knowing When to Have Fun and When to Grind
For Courtney, the relaxed culture does not mean the work itself is always easy.
“Working at Charter is super nice and generally a good time, but when it comes time to grind, you gotta grind,” she said.
That balance of focus and intensity is part of what she appreciates about Charter, and that appreciation extends to how the company supports its people during difficult times.
“Charter is the first place I have worked that actually cares about your mental health,” Courtney said. “They are willing to work with you on how to find a solution to whatever problem you may be going through.”
After nearly four years, Courtney has found more than a job at Charter; she has found a workplace where she can do her job her way, help wherever she is needed, build friendships, and still enjoy the occasional office prank.
We are grateful for everything Courtney brings to the Charter family, from her dedication and hard work to her fun-loving personality!
