At Charter Construction, our commitment to being a people-first company is something we prioritize on every job site, in the office, and through the everyday decisions we make as a company. While our field teams and leaders often take center stage, there’s also a group working behind the scenes to make sure employees are supported, heard, and set up to succeed.
Senior HR Generalist Carlee Clifton is one of those people.
For the past four years, Carlee has helped shape the employee experience from day one through every stage of growth. She started as an HR administrator and now serves as a senior HR generalist, supporting teams across the company.
From Burnout to Belonging
Carlee was drawn to construction for its energy and constant change.
“The construction industry is very fast-paced and it changes often. I’m the type of person who enjoys a fast-paced environment and embraces change.”
But when Carlee chose to work at Charter, what truly set it apart wasn’t just the pace. It was the people. Before joining the company, Carlee worked in an environment where 70- to 80-hour weeks were the norm. Over time, she realized something needed to shift. A simple comment from her four-year-old niece put it into perspective.
“She asked me, ‘Why do you work all the time? I never see you.’ And I thought, oh my goodness, it takes a four-year-old to tell me this.”
That moment led her to look for a place that valued both performance and personal life.
“Charter really offered me that balance to be with my family,” Carlee shared. “We truly embrace the work-life balance. And it’s been a great fit for my family and me.”
Just as important, she found a leadership team that invests in its people.
“The entire leadership team has really just pushed me to excel, and I don’t think that I would be able to succeed without them,” Carlee said. “Having that type of reassurance is huge—feeling like you have that backup and it’s not all on your shoulders. We’re all in this together.”
Cultivating a People-First Culture
Today, Carlee plays a key role in helping our workplace culture stay healthy, even as Charter has grown to nearly 700 employees. She describes the environment simply: people-first and family-oriented.
“Unlike most companies that rely solely on structure or policies or performance metrics, Charter is family-oriented. That culture creates a sense of belonging and sets it apart.”
One of her favorite examples of Charter’s culture in action is the monthly Kudos event, where leadership visits a job site to thank crews, share a meal, and connect face-to-face.
“The appreciation from the top down just proves that the people are never forgotten, no matter how the workforce is changing.”
She also points to the small details that make a difference, like an on-site gym, many gathering spaces, and intentional quiet rooms—amenities designed to support different personalities and needs.
Even with the company’s growth, Carlee says the feeling she first had when she arrived hasn’t changed at all.
“It still feels like family,” she said.
Carrying It Forward
For Carlee, success isn’t measured in policies or paperwork. It’s measured in people who feel supported and empowered. By helping employees grow, balance their work and their life, and have space for open communication, she helps ensure Charter remains a place where people want to build long-term careers.
Because at the end of the day, the strongest foundations aren’t just made of concrete. They’re made of people.
