For nearly 30 years, Teresa Binkley has been a vital part of the Charter Construction family, embodying dedication and an incredible work ethic. Her unwavering support for her colleagues has helped shape the company’s culture into one of collaboration and mutual respect. Teresa’s journey with Charter began in the fall of 1996 when she joined the company as a receptionist. The following year, Teresa transitioned from receptionist to payroll supervisor, and in 2005, she became the company’s controller—a role she has held with pride and expertise ever since.
Teresa attributes her growth within the company to the trust and confidence placed in her by the leadership team at Charter, particularly CEO Turner Talley. He encouraged Teresa to take on new challenges and supported her as she learned the ins and outs of each role. But Teresa’s rise from receptionist to controller wasn’t solely due to the opportunities she was offered. Teresa’s drive and proactive attitude toward learning and growth have everything to do with her success. As she continued to progress professionally, she sought additional education every step of the way. With a strong educational foundation and her fearless approach to taking on new responsibilities, Teresa embraced each challenge with confidence and dedication.
Almost three decades after joining Charter Construction, Teresa continues to exemplify the importance of hard work, open-mindedness, and learning from others to achieve long-term success both professionally and personally. Reflecting on her long tenure at Charter, Teresa describes the company’s culture as one where support and collaboration are at the core.
“Charter has always been a place where people help each other. I always tell our employees that there’s no problem we can’t solve together. I never want anyone to be afraid to ask questions or ask for help.”
Despite the company’s growth, Teresa emphasizes that the supportive atmosphere has remained a constant. This sense of camaraderie and support is something she values deeply, and it’s also what she says has contributed to her many years with the company.
Teresa’s natural inclination to connect with and care for her colleagues is evident, and she takes pride in her role as a friendly face and a helpful resource within the office. Even after moving into a leadership role, Teresa fondly recalls her time as a receptionist, saying, “Being at the front desk was one of the most rewarding experiences. I got to meet everyone and help make their days just a little bit better.”
To this day, Teresa still makes it a priority to talk to everybody who joins Charter, making sure they’re comfortable and that they truly feel like part of the team.
“I am called the mom of Charter Construction, and I just love it! It’s so special and really means a lot to me to have that kind of unofficial title.”
As someone who has experienced Charter’s evolution through the years, Teresa encourages new employees to embrace the learning process, ask questions, and lean on their teammates. For Teresa, open communication and teamwork are the key ingredients to both individual and collective success.
Her insights extend beyond her role, too. Teresa has witnessed the cyclical nature of the construction industry in Nashville and has seen how Charter’s approach has evolved to navigate these fluctuations.
“Diversifying our services has helped the company weather downturns, and it’s these forward-thinking strategies that continue to make our company so successful.”
For Teresa, Charter Construction is more than just a place to work—it’s a community built on trust, teamwork, and genuine care for one another. Her journey from receptionist to Controller is a testament to her dedication and the supportive culture that defines Charter.
