At Charter Construction, we believe in fostering a people-first culture where every team member feels supported to reach their highest potential. We also are committed to providing opportunities for our employees to grow and advance in their careers.
General Superintendent Chris Fulton is a perfect example of our vision in action.
From Laborer to Leader
Chris Fulton’s journey with Charter began in 1992, and his entry into the company had an interesting start.
“I was dating my now wife, and her father was a superintendent for Charter. As the relationship progressed, I thought it was a good time to join the company,” Chris recalls.
He started as a laborer right out of high school, learning the fundamentals of concrete construction from the ground up. He then transitioned to a carpenter, honing his skills and craftsmanship. Six years later, his dedication and work ethic were recognized, and he was promoted to superintendent.
Over the years, Chris has enjoyed being part of Charter’s significant growth. “I think there were probably 80 to 90 employees when I joined. Now, there are probably 900 field employees! It’s been impressive to see, and I’m glad to be a part of it,” he shares.
Chris continues to grow and learn, embracing new opportunities and challenges as they arise. Last year, he was promoted to general superintendent. In this pivotal role, he leads the team of superintendents, providing guidance and support across multiple projects.
“I love getting to work with all of the superintendents and help them manage their jobs. I kind of teach them what I’ve learned over the years,” Chris explains, emphasizing his role as a mentor and leader.
Where Ambition Meets Opportunity
Over his 30+ years at Charter, Chris has had the privilege of meeting and advising countless employees, from interns to seasoned professionals. He always emphasizes the opportunity for professional growth within the company.
“If you show the ambition and the drive and work hard, you can achieve whatever level you’re looking for,” Chris says, sharing his belief in the power of hard work and dedication.
He has seen this happen to many employees, including Charter’s president, Richard Wilson.
“I was actually Richard’s foreman when he first started working at Charter. I’ve watched him since he was a 19-year-old kid. Now, he’s president of the company,” Chris shares.
Chris recognizes how unique and special this is in the construction industry, especially in a rapidly growing city like Nashville. It has made all the difference in his career, fostering a sense of loyalty and commitment in Chris.
“In 33 years, I’ve never really given any serious thought of working anywhere else,” Chris states, underscoring his unwavering dedication to Charter.
We are immensely grateful for Chris’s leadership, experience, and the invaluable role he plays in instilling the culture of Charter. His dedication and experience are invaluable to our team, and his commitment to Charter’s success is deeply appreciated.
